@WidenerBaseball Breaks Out The Bats In Twinbill Split

CHESTER, Pa. – The Widener University baseball team posted season highs in runs and hits as the Pride split a doubleheader with the Alvernia Golden Wolves, winning the second game of a doubleheader 14-3 on Friday. Alvernia took the opener 3-1.
 
GAME ONE NOTES
  • Alvernia got on the board first with a run in the opening inning. Widener tied the game with a Bryce Fremgen single, scoring Anthony Boccio in the fourth.
  • Dylan Peiffer was magnificent for his second consecutive outing, allowing one run on two hits through six and struck out seven in the game.
  • The Golden Wolves forged ahead in the seventh with a homer. Widener had the tying run on base in the bottom of the inning, but couldn't knot the score.
 
GAME TWO NOTES
  • Down 1-0 in the second, the Pride exploded for seven runs on six hits and sent 13 batters to the plate. Boccio, Fremgen, and Justin Costanzo all reached base twice in the inning.
  • Widener scored twice more in the fifth to go up 10-3. It tacked on three more in the seventh, keyed by a run scoring double from Boccio and an RBI single by Costanzo.
  • Alex Zilli came in and threw the final three innings, not conceding a run, striking out a career-best five to earn his first collegiate save.
  • Matt Samson, Nick Barenz, and Boccio each had three hits in the game.
  • Costanzo drove in three runs. Samson, Brandon Reis, and Greg Elfreth each knocked in two.
 
UP NEXT
The two teams finish the series with a doubleheader Saturday. First pitch from Angelica Park in Reading is slated for noon.
