Zettlemoyer Shines As @WidenerBaseball Splits With Alvernia

READING, Pa. Joey Zettlemoyer tossed a gem in the second game of a doubleheader as the Widener University baseball team split a twinbill with the Alvernia Golden Wolves. The Pride won the second game 7-0 after falling 3-2 in the opener.

HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME ONE
  • Widener scored the opening run of the game in the first inning as Matt Samson singled followed by bunt hits from Alex Savkov and Brandon Reis to load the bases. After a pair of strikeouts, it looked as if the chance might go by the wayside, but Nick Barenz worked a walk to force in a run.
  • Alvernia battled back with a tally in the bottom of the first.
  • In the third, the Blue and Gold took the lead as with one out, Anthony Boccio doubled and scored on an error one batter later.
  • The Golden Wolves took the lead for good with two runs in the fifth

HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME TWO
  • The Pride wasted no time in getting on the board as in the top of the first Samson singled and moved to second on a sacrifice. A single from Boccio drove home Samson and brought up Bryce Fremgen who parked a two-run homer to center for a 3-0 Widener lead.
  • The score remained that way until the seventh when the Blue and Gold struck again. Greg Elfreth singled with one out and was on first base when Ian Kauffman tripled, plating Elfreth to make it 4-0.
  • Two batters later, Kyle Brex singled, scoring Kauffman to extend the advantage. Next up was Boccio who tripled, sending Brex across the dish.
  • Widener capped the inning on an RBI single from Fremgen to go up 7-0.
  • For all the offense, however, the game belonged to Zettlemoyer. The righthander tossed his first complete game shutout, dazzling during a career-best nine innings. He scattered five hits, walking one and striking out four.
