Field Hockey Takes Top Seeded Ramapo To OT In ECAC Semifinals

Marcavage scores go-ahead goal, but Ramapo deals Pride 2-1 setback with late offensive outburst

MAHWAH, N.J. – The Widener University field hockey team took the top-seeded Roadrunners to overtime in the ECAC Division III Semifinals, but Ramapo would deal the Pride its final setback of the season with a goal in the 62nd minute.

The Pride finishes one of its best seasons ever at 15-6 overall - its fifth consecutive year at .500 or better. It also competed in four postseason contests and won two – the most in program history.

In a battle of two of the nation's top-25 offenses, it was the defenses that controlled much of the game as both teams were held scoreless through the first 56 minutes of play. WU held the edge in both shots (12-9) and penalty corners (8-7), but Ramapo's 8-5 advantage in attempts on cage would prove to be the difference maker.

After three periods of back-and-forth with no points to show, the final frame would see a combined eight penalty corners and nine shots from the two sides. Bryn Marcavage finally ended the scoreless deadlock in the 57th minute when she fired in her fifth goal of the season on a Widener corner. However, that lead was short lived as the Roadrunners scored a goal of their own on a penalty corner with less than two minutes remaining to send the game to OT.

Ramapo took that offensive spark into overtime and ended the match with one final score just 1:43 into the extra period.

Widener goalkeeper and MAC Commonwealth Rookie of the Year, Kylie Haberstroh, finished the afternoon with six saves, including four in the final period.
