ANNVILLE, Pa. –
Devan Rimmer became just the fourth player in Widener women's basketball history to score 1,500 career points as a second half surge allowed the Pride to pull away from the Lebanon Valley Dutchmen in a 72-51 win on Wednesday night.
GAME NOTES
- Rimmer tallied 16 in the game and joins Maureen McGinn (1,935 – 1978-82), Chelsea Luhta (1,679 – 2002-06), and Annette Angelotti (1,568 – 1979-83) as the only players to score 1,500 or more points for the Blue and Gold.
- The win improves the Pride to 16-3, extending the best NCAA era start in program history.
- Joining Rimmer in double figures were Erin Phelan (15), Madison Ireland (14), and Kyra Schenk (13).
- Schenk added nine rebounds to pace Widener.
- It was the first win for the Pride at Lebanon Valley since February 28, 2009 when Widener downed the Dutchmen in double overtime for the Commonwealth Conference championship.
- The win did not come in typical fashion for the Pride who was held to a season low four free throw attempts. Widener also outrebounded its opponent for just the seventh time this season.
- WU shot 50.8 percent (32-for-63) in the contest, its third time this year making more than half of its shots. Two of those three games have come against LVC.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Much like the first game between the two schools, the Pride jumped on top early, scoring the first 11 points of the game. Nine of the 11 came from Rimmer as the Blue and Gold built a 21-9 lead after 10 minutes. WU extended the lead on a three by
Charlotte Stern to open the second period before LVC netted 13 in a row, cutting the gap to 24-22. A nearly even remainder of the half saw the Pride hold a slim 33-30 lead at the break.
Still just a four-point game 2:29 into the third quarter, Widener went on a 13-0 run to get some breathing room back at 51-34 heading into the final two minutes of the frame. After a couple of LVC baskets, Rimmer scored her milestone bucket on a layup to end the stanza, putting the Pride up 15. The strong play continued opening the fourth with WU posting nine of the first 11 points
