CHESTER, Pa. – The Widener University softball team went up against Gwynedd Mercy in a double-header on Saturday afternoon, winning game one by way of a walk-off, then downing the Griffins easily in game two.
How it happened in game one
- Trailing by two in the second, Widener rallied in the bottom half of the inning, starting with an RBI single from Marissa Camac. Jamie Gosselin knocked in the Pride's second run, and then Ally McDowell built upon her hot start, scoring two with a double.
- Â Gwynedd tied the game in the fourth
- Hope DiMario doubled to begin the bottom of the fourth. Mikaela Lovell singled, moving DiMario to third, then Carli Benozich singled, bringing both baserunners home
- The Pride held a 6-4 advantage going into the fifth
- Solid pitching saw both teams go scoreless into the seventh
- Gwynedd had three players cross the plate in the top of the seventh, taking a one-run lead
- With the game on the line, Benozich led off the bottom of the seventh with a double
- Kelly Dodgson sacrifice bunted and Benozich moved to third on the play
- Ariel Silva tied the game with a double, scoring Benozich
- Shannon Gullickson pinch ran for Silva, then Camac had the game-winning hit, singling to center field, scoring Gullickson and ending game one
How it happened in game two
- After being held scoreless in the first, Widener broke through in the second by way of a Mikaela Lovell single, bringing in DiMario
- Two more Pride players crossed the plate in the fourth
- In the fifth, Lindsey Cooper smacked a two-run homer
- Down by seven in the final inning, the Griffins got one back
- Isabella Kostic ended the game on the mound, securing the victory and sweep for the Pride
