CHESTER, Pa. – The Widener University baseball team scored five times in extra innings to win game one of a doubleheader against the Arcadia Knights in a MAC Commonwealth contest on Sunday afternoon. The Knights won the second game 4-1.
BY THE NUMBERS
Stephen DeBellis and Greg Elfreth each had three hits in the twinbill with DeBellis driving in three runs.
Glenn Seymour,
Dylan Morrissette, and
Matthew Guarino had two hits apiece.
Guarino homered in the first game.
Seymour drove home the game-winning run in the opener with a single to left.
HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME ONE (Widener 10, Arcadia 9 – 8 innings)
- Things looked bleak for the Pride after the Knights scored for runs in the top of the eighth, but WU showed its resolve in a big way in the bottom of the inning. With a runner on third and two out, Widener started its comeback. Morrissette singled to score Guarino who had led off the frame with a double. Pinch-hitter Kyle Buchman singled, advancing Brandon Reis, who was pinch-running to second. Elfreth followed with a single of his own to load the bases. After Ricky Collings came in to run for Elfreth, Nick D'Alessandro singled to center to plate Reis and make it 9-7.
- With the bases still loaded, DeBellis laced a single to left to score a pair of runs, tying the game at 9-9. On the play, D'Alessandro just beat the throw to third, moving the winning run 90 feet away.
- Seymour sent the home crowd and dugout into a frenzy as he roped a single into left to bring home D'Alessandro with the victorious score.
- Widener posted the first runs of the game in the bottom of the second inning as Seymour led off with a double in front of a two-run homer from Guarino.
- After Arcadia tied the game in the top of the third, the Pride got the runs back in the bottom of the inning as Brennan Taylor led off with a walk and Elfreth singled in front of a sac bunt by Nick D'Alessandro, moving the runners to second and third. A sac fly off the bat of DeBellis plated Taylor. Seymour followed with a ground ball to short that looked like it would end the inning, but the throw to first was wide, allowing Elfreth to score, making it 4-2 WU.
- The Knights came back in the fifth, scoring three times to take their first lead of the game at 5-4.
- Undaunted, the Blue and Gold pushed a run across in the bottom of the inning. Elfreth led off with a single and moved to second on a wild pitch. D'Alessandro struck out, but the ball bounced away from the Arcadia catcher allowing D'Alessandro to reach and move Elfreth to third. DeBellis followed with an infield single to load the bases for Seymour, who worked a walk after falling behind in the count 0-2, forcing in the tying run.
HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME TWO (Arcadia 4, Widener 1)
- Arcadia jumped on the board early, scoring three runs in the first, two of them unearned.
- The Blue and Gold got one of the runs back in the bottom of the inning as DeBellis singled with two outs and moved to second on a walk to Seymour. Widener then executed a successful double steal. On the throw to third, the ball ricocheted off the third baseman and into left field, giving DeBellis the chance to scramble to his feet and score, cutting the edge to 3-1.
- After Arcadia pushed a run across in the second, neither team was able to crack the scoreboard for the remainder of the contest.
