CHESTER, Pa. –
Greg Elfreth hit his first collegiate home run, but the Alvernia Golden Wolves scored three runs late to upend the Widener University baseball team 5-3 on Friday afternoon.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Elfreth led the nine-hit attack for Widener with three base knocks including his first career homer.
- Nick D'Alessandro and Glenn Seymour each had two hits for the Pride. Both of Seymour's went for doubles.
- Josh Lafferty turned in an excellent start on the mound, pitching seven innings, allowing just two runs and striking out five.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After Alvernia scored in the top of the first, Widener got the runs right back in the bottom of the frame, Back-to-back singles from Elfreth and D'Alessandro put runners on first and second. After a fielder's choice erased the lead runner, Seymour tied the game with a double off the leftfield wall to score D'Alessandro and move Stephen DeBellis to third.
- Matthew Guarino came up next and drove in DeBellis with a groundout to put the Pride up 2-1.
- From that point, both starting pitchers were fantastic as neither team scored again until the top of the seventh when Alvernia manufactured a run to tie the game at 2-2.
- The Blue and Gold wasted no time in re-taking the lead as Elfreth hit his first career homer with two out to push Widener back up 3-2.
- The Golden Wolves had the final say, however, scoring two unearned in the eighth and an insurance run in the ninth to claim the win.
