Guarino Leads Offense for @WidenerBaseball at Alvernia

READING, Pa.Matthew Guarino had three hits and four RBI through a pair of games, but the Widener University baseball team was upended by the Alvernia Golden Wolves by scores of 12-6 and 7-3 in MAC Commonwealth action on Saturday afternoon.
 
BY THE NUMBERS  
HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME ONE (Alvernia 12, Widener 6)
  • Alvernia opened the scoring with two runs in the second inning and one in the third to take a 3-0 lead.
  • Widener came back with two in the fourth. Leading off the frame Stephen DeBellis singled up the middle. Two batters later, Mike Garofalo doubled, plating DeBellis. Dylan Morrissette followed with a two-bagger of his own, bringing in Garofalo and slicing the edge to 3-2.
  • The Golden Wolves opened it up in the fifth, scoring five times, the big shot a grand slam from Ben Dubas, his second homer of the game. Four more runs came across in the sixth for Alvernia.
  • The Blue and Gold fought back in the seventh, scoring a pair as with Ryan Bennett on third and Greg Elfreth on second following a single and a double, a double be DeBellis plated both runners.
  • A walk to Glenn Seymour put two runners on for Matthew Guarino who tripled, driving in both and making it 12-6.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME TWO (Alvernia 7, Widener 3)
  • The Golden Wolves tallied the first run of the game in the bottom of the third inning.
  • Widener came right back in the top of the fourth as a single by Nick D'Alessandro and a double from DeBellis put runners on second and third for Seymour who singled both home for a 2-1 Pride lead. Guarino followed with a double, bringing Seymour around, extending the advantage.
  • Alvernia pulled closer with an unearned run in the fifth. Five more came across in the sixth, putting AU on top 7-3.
 
UP NEXT
Widener is back in play on Tuesday, April 17 when it hosts Rutgers-Camden in a non-conference battle. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
