@WidenerMVB Upended by Rutgers-Newark

CHESTER, Pa. – The Widener University men's volleyball team was upended in a non-conference match on Wednesday by the Rutgers-Newark Scarlet Raiders 3-0.
 
HIGHIGHTS
  • A.J. Sungenis led Widener with seven kills in the match and also notched an ace.
  • Billy Barclay topped the Pride with 15 assists.
  • Kyle Minder made the most of his swings with four kills in five attacks.
 
FIRST SET NOTES (11-25)
  • The Blue and Gold started the set well, going up 3-1 on kills by Sungenis, Wil Cacciatore and an ace by Sungenis.
  • Still close at 6-5 RU, the Scarlet Raiders scored 11 unanswered to take control of the set.
  • Kyle Minder and Sungenis led the Pride with three kills each in the set with both hitting better than .350. Minder had his trio of kills in as many attempts.
  • Widener hit a respectable. 174 in the frame.
 
SECOND SET NOTES (7-25)
  • The Pride remained in shouting distance early in the set, trailing 11-6 before a 14-1 run capped the set for Rutgers-Newark
  • Sungenis took the lead in the set with a pair of kills.
 
THIRD SET NOTES (14-25)
  • The Scarlet Raiders started strong, opening a 7-2 lead before Widener rallied back to 9-6 on a kill be Cacciatore.
  • Faced with match point, Matt Blaum stepped up for the Blue and Gold, coming up with a kill and a service ace.
  • Sungenis and Cacciatore had two kills each for the Pride and Barclay recorded six assists.
 
UP NEXT
The Pride is back in action at the Stevenson tri-match on Saturday, Feb. 17. Widener will take on Stevenson at 2:00 p.m. and Hunter at 4:00 p.m.
