CHESTER, Pa. – The Widener University football team closed its season on Saturday, falling to the #13 Delaware Valley Aggies 33-0 in the battle for the Keystone Cup in front of more than 4,000 fans at Elizabeth J. Hirschmann Field at Leslie C. Quick, Jr. Stadium.
Â
The Blue and Gold was led defensively by
Brian Armstrong and
Shane Mulhern who had nine tackles each.
Jordan Powell made seven stops and posted 2.0 TFL.
Â
The two teams played a very defensive-minded first half. After both teams punted on their first possession, Widener was driving before an interception at the goal line stopped the push. The Aggies took advantage of the turnover, scoring six plays later. A safety and a field goal for DVU capped the scoring in the half. In the second, DelVal pulled away with seven points in the third prior to scoring twice in the fourth.
Â
At halftime of the game, the Pride hosted its second Audible for Autism. The event raises awareness for autism and research while creating a lifelong, positive memory for those involved in the run. Multi-Grammy Award winning artist Muzz Skillings kicked off the event by speaking to the crowd about the importance of the run. With the help of the Chester Fire Department and special guest Jerry Irving from the 1981 Widener national championship team, three amazing youngsters, Victoria, Aiden, and Austin, took their handoffs and raced to the end zone. Each scored their touchdown with the sellout crowd cheering them on and left with a memory that will never be forgotten. For more information, visit www.audibleforautism.org.
