YORK, Pa. (May 7, 2017) - Despite the early lead, the Widener University baseball team fell to Alvernia in game five of the MAC Commonwealth tournament on Sunday afternoon at Peoplesbank Park.
With two outs in the first frame, sophomore
Stephen DeBellis (Marlton, N.J.) opened the scoring with a double down left field to drive in senior
Nick Enos (Williamstown, N.J.) and put the Pride ahead 1-0.
Alvernia then tied the game after a ground out and a strike out in the second frame with a home run from Ben Dubais out of the right field.
With Stephen Carbonara at bat and a runner on second and third, the Crusaders had an opportunity to take the lead, however, Widener's fielding prevailed with a double play to end the frame.
After a sacrifice bunt and a ground out to the shortstop advanced senior
Justin Czupryna (Roxbury, N.J.) to third base, Enos hit a single up center field to drive him home for the 2-1 lead.
Widener continued to pad it's lead in the seventh frame to put them ahead 5-1. Senior
Greg McDonough (Ambler, Pa.) tripled through center field, Enos was intentionally walked, and DeBellis drove in both runners on base with a double through left center. Senior
Mike Elfreth (Washington Township, N.J.) then hit a single and advanced to second on the throw to drive in DeBellis for the third run of the frame.
Despite the 5-1 lead, Alvernia then scored seven runs in the bottom of the eighth and shut out Widener in the ninth to take the lead and walk away with the victory.
Antonio Baglivo picked up the win on the mound for Alvernia by pitching two and one-thirds innings, surrendering no runs, two hits, striking out four and issuing one walk. Senior
Elliot Snyder suffered the loss. He surrendered four runs, one hit, struck out none and issued two walks.
