CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – Nine different players found the scoring column for the Widener University women's basketball team in a 76-64 victory against the Marywood University Pacers on Tuesday evening at the Insalaco Arena.
After finishing the first quarter with a slim 21-20 disadvantage, Widener turned on the jets midway through the second frame and broke the game open by going on a 10-0 run. Sophomore
Madison Ireland connected on two free throws to spark the outburst and
Julia Venturelli capped the run with a layup to give the Pride a 38-28 lead at the 1:50 mark.
Widener kept its foot on the gas pedal and stayed in control for the second half. Ireland made two charity shots to extend the margin to 53-40, and
Emily Hardy closed out the quarter with a bucket to give the Pride a 56-47 edge at the end of the third frame.
With the game practically in hand, Widener continued to capitalize offensively with Gallagher leading the charge. Gallagher scored 10 points in the fourth and sank a free throw to extend the lead to as many as 15 with 30 seconds remaining in the game. Rimmer knocked down two more charity shots before Ireland converted at the line to close out the scoring in the rout.
Ireland led the offense with 16 points and eight assists. She also had seven rebounds and one steal. Rimmer and Gallagher each contributed 13 points apiece.
Julia Venturelli had a season-high 11 points and
Tatiana Pleasant led with nine rebounds. As a team, Widener shot 34.8 percent from the field and went a season-high of 76.7 percent from behind the line. Marywood held a slight 53-41 edge on rebounds.
The Pride will travel to Radnor, Pa. on Saturday, Dec. 30 to tip off the Cabrini College Classic. Gametime is slated for 4:00 p.m. against the Cabrini College Cavaliers.
