CHESTER, Pa. – Four players scored in double figures as the Widener University men's basketball team picked up a 76-66 non-conference win against the Immaculata Mighty Macs on Saturday afternoon.
HIGHLIGHTS
- The Pride was led by Tyler Drews who recorded his fifth 20+ point game this season, netting 21.
- Ryan McMahon tied a career-high with 14 while Connor Laverty chipped in 13 and Sardayah Sambo had 12.
- Sambo notched his first double-double of the season and the 17th of his career, leading the Blue and Gold with 11 rebounds. He flirted with a triple-double, blocking seven shots.
- Nick Jackson added eight and Sam Smith, playing his first game of the season, tallied seven.
- Widener pulled in 52 rebounds, its second highest total of the season.
- As a team, the Pride blocked 12 shots, its best mark of the year.
FIRST HALF NOTES
- Widener steadily built a lead through the early stages of the first half, going up 17-9 at the 11:31 mark before a Mighty Macs' run sliced the lead to 22-21 in a matter of three minutes.
- The Pride responded, going on a 23-7 run, ignited by a McMahon three-point play and capped by a Laverty three-pointer to end the half and take a 45-28 lead into the locker room.
- The Blue and Gold shot 54.5 percent in the opening 20 minutes, connecting on 18-of-33 shots from the floor.
- Drews scored 11 in the half with Laverty netting 10.
- Sambo had a monster stanza with eight points, six rebounds, and four blocks.
SECOND HALF NOTES
- Widener and Immaculata played evenly for the majority of the half with the Pride holding a 69-53 lead on a Drews trey off a feed from McMahon with 5:35 to go.
- The Mighty Macs battled back in the waning minutes, slicing the Pride lead to eight, thanks to a 13-5 run with two minutes to go.
- McMahon had nine of his points after intermission.
- Drews topped the Pride in the period with 10.
