Women's Soccer Drops Battle in ECAC First Round

MADISON, N.J. - A season filled with historic strides came to a heartbreaking end as the Widener University women's soccer team battled to a 2-1 loss to the FDU Devils in the first round of the ECAC Division III Women's Soccer Championship.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Widener got on the board just over a minute into the game when Lauren Wilson pressured the back line to draw out the goal keeper and cause an own goal.
  • The Devils scored two more goals in the first half to secure the 2-1 lead.
  • With eight minutes remaining in regulation, Widener kept pushing as Lexi Slusher went head-to-head with the keeper at the top of the 18 for one last unlucky opportunity.
 
SEASON RECAP
  • The Pride were 12-7 overall this year and 5-3 in the MAC Commonwealth.
  • The Pride has 44 goals on the season, which is 26 more than last year.
  • This was the first season since 2008 that Widener has made a MAC Commonwealth Championship and also an ECAC Championship appearance.
  • Widener garnered three All-Conference selections in addition to one major award winner. Shea Scannell was named to the First Team. Alyssa Dionisio and Gabby Campbell were Honorable Mention selections. Head Coach Kelly Wakeman was named the MAC Commonwealth Coach of the Year.
  • Scannell tied a program record with eight points in one game.
  • Widener is slated to return eight starters next year.
