DANBURY, Conn. – Widener University baseball standouts
Josh Lafferty (Pottstown, Pa.) and
Michael Elfreth (Washington Township, N.J.) each garnered All-ECAC Division III South Region recognition, as announced by the organization. Lafferty made the first team, and Elfreth earned a place on the second team after leading the Pride to the NCAA Regionals for the second time in three years.
Lafferty, a sophomore pitcher, is earning his third all-region award after being recognized by the ABCA as well as D3baseball.com last month. He also made the All-Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth First Team after finishing the 2016 campaign with a 2.35 earned run average to go along with an 8-2 record and 52 strikeouts over 80.1 innings of work. In addition, Lafferty picked up a victory and a save in the conference tournament to help the Pride capture the title.
Elfreth was Widener's primary starter at the hot spot and joined Lafferty on the All-MAC Commonwealth First Team for his efforts this season. He finished the year with 50 hits and a .331 batting average, ranking fourth on the team in both categories. The junior also provided a spark by recording at least one hit in four straight postseason games to close out the spring, which included going 3-for-5 from the plate with an RBI single and two runs scored in the team's 9-0 NCAA Mideast Regional win over Ohio Wesleyan.
Widener (25-18-1) graduates only three seniors and is slated to bring back more than 30 letterwinners next season. The list of returners that will aim to win the MAC Commonwealth crown for the third time in four years includes Lafferty and the entire offensive lineup.
