CHESTER, Pa. (Nov. 22, 2016) – Freshman
Devan Rimmer (Perkasie, Pa.) led four players in double figures and a balanced scoring attack as the Widener University women's basketball team defeated Marywood by a 95-68 score on Tuesday evening at the Schwartz Center.
Widener (2-2), which had all 14 players score at least one basket, led for nearly the entire contest and burst loose in the second quarter. After freshman
Angelica Borja (Somerville, N.J.) set up junior
Nikki Petri (Congers, N.Y.) for a 3-pointer to close out the scoring in the opening frame, Rimmer made a layup as well as two shots at the charity stripe to put the hosts ahead by twin figures at 35-25 with 6:36 left in the half. Freshman
Madison Ireland then found junior
Julia Venturelli (Bridgewater, N.J.) for a trifecta before hitting two free throws to give the Pride a 49-35 lead heading into the break.
The Pride stayed in control for the second half and did not allow Marywood (1-2) to pull any closer than 14 points the rest of the way. Cullen made two charity shots to extend the margin to 60-39, and Borja ballooned the lead to 26 at 73-47 at the end of the third frame.
With the game practically in hand, Widener continued to explode offensively in the fourth by having nine players combine to tally an additional 22 points. Freshman
Kayla Hons (Drums, Pa.) netted a trifecta from the top of the key before sophomore
Julia Sanders (Pitman, N.J.) converted at the line to close out the scoring in the rout.
Rimmer netted 16 points in 22 minutes of action for Widener to lead all scorers. She also had five rebounds and three steals. Gardy finished with a career-high 10 points, while Petri added 11 points and a career-best eight boards. Freshman point guards Ireland and Borja combined to accumulate six assists while turning the ball over just once.
Marywood was led by its bench play and most notably received a 15-point effort from Lisa Steakin. Gab Giordano tallied 11 points, five assists, five rebounds and three steals.
Widener will next open up Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth play when it visits Lebanon Valley on Wednesday, Nov. 30 at 6 p.m.
