YORK, Pa. (May 2, 2015) – The Widener baseball team forced a sudden-death game with a 5-1 victory over Alvernia in Game One, but eventually fell to the Crusaders in Game Two 6-1 at Santander Stadium.
In Game One, sophomore center fielder
Greg McDonough (Ambler, Pa.) tied the game up with an RBI single down the right field line in the top of the fifth inning. Shortstop
Nicholas Enos (Williamstown, N.J.), who reached on a single to left field, scored on the play.
Widener added two in the top of the sixth inning through two RBI singles from the bottom of the order. Sophomore third baseman
Michael Elfreth (Washington Township, N.J.) knocked in catcher
Justin Czupryna (Roxbury, N.J.) from second base. Right fielder
Bob Barnett (Glenolden, Pa.) scored freshman
Matthew Guarino (Blackwood, N.J.) with a base knock in the sixth inning.
Eflreth added an RBI single to left field in the top of the seventh to score
Justin Healey (Ocean City, N.J.). The third baseman finished the game 3-for-3 with 2 runs batted in.
Brok Martin is doubled off at first base to end the bottom of the seventh inning on Vinny Case fly out to right field. Alvernia opened the scoring in the top of the first inning with a single through the left side by Ben Sawyer.
McDonough added his 26th consecutive stolen base in the victory.
Senior
Robert Barth (Norristown, Pa.) started the game on the mound for the Pride. He allowed nine hits, one run, no walks and fanned eight in a complete game victory.
In the bottom of the fourth inning of Game Two, Enos split the right center gaps with an RBI double. Guarino scored all the way from the first base on the play. The shortstop finished the game 1-for-4 from the plate with one run batted in.
Alvernia opened the first inning with a two-run double by Ben Sawyer. The Crusaders added another run in the top half of the inning.
Senior
Matt Scherer (Havertown, Pa.) was 2-for-4 from the plate with one walk.
Junior lefty
Joe Santone (Blackwood, N.J.) was dealt the loss on the mound. He allowed four runs on five hits in six innings of work.
The Pride left eleven runners on base with five of them coming in the first three innings.
The Blue and Gold finished up the 2015 campaign with a 23-18 record and 12-9 in league play. Widener reached their second consecutive conference championship.
