Baseball Splits Commonwealth Conference Doubleheader with Stevenson

OWINGS MILLS, Md. (Apr. 3, 2015) – The Widener baseball team split a Commonwealth Conference double-header with Stevenson Saturday afternoon at Park Field.

The Mustangs took Game One, 6-2 and the Pride stole the nightcap 3-1.

In Game One, sophomore Greg McDonough accounted for both runs scored on Stevenson's pitcher Alec Romanowski. The top half of the third inning saw the centerfielder reach base on an infield single to short stop. The sophomore advanced to second on the play, as freshman Joseph Addvensky (Milford, Pa.) scored on throwing error made.

McDonough would later cut into the lead held by Stevenson in the top of the sixth scoring on a passed ball by Jake Dimon. He finished Game One 3-for-3 with one run scored and one run batted in.

Senior hurler Robert Barth (Norristown, Pa.) was dealt the loss. He allowed ten hits, six runs, one walk and fanned six in six innings of work. The righty falls to 1-4 on the season.

In Game Two, McDonough left right where he finished the first game off at. The sophomore knocked in the winning run with an RBI double down the left field line in the top half of the third inning. The righty's double gave Widener (9-8, 4-3 CC) a 2-0 advantage.

Left fielder Matt Scherer (Havertown, Pa.) added an insurance run in the third with an RBI single to center field. The senior finished 2-for-4 in game two with one run batted in.

Junior lefty Joe Santone (Blackwood, N.J.) earned the complete game victory. The hurler allowed one earned run, seven hits and one walk in his second straight victory. Santone improves to 2-1 on the season with a 1.52 ERA.

The Pride will be back in action on Monday as they close out the season series against Stevenson (10-11-2, 7-4 CC) at 3:30 pm in Chester, Pa.
