Baseball Drops Commonwealth Conference Season Series to Stevenson

CHESTER, Pa. (Apr. 6, 2015) – The Widener baseball team suffered a tough Commonwealth Conference loss to Stevenson, 6-4 on Monday afternoon.
 
The Pride fall to 9-9 and 4-4 in Commonwealth play, while the Mustangs improve to 11-11-2 and 8-5.
 
Left fielder Matt Scherer (Havertown, Pa.) was 2-for-3 from the plate with one run batted in and a walk. Both of the hits off of Scherer's bat were doubles to deep left field. The senior cut into the Mustangs lead with a sacrifice fly to deep center field to score sophomore Michael Elfreth (Washington Township, N.J.).
 
Elfreth finished the tame 2-for-5 with two runs scored and two doubles. The third baseman first scored on a Greg McDonough (Ambler, Pa.) double to right center field.
 
Widener cut the lead in half in the bottom of the fifth inning on an RBI ground out to third base by sophomore second baseman Justin Healey (Ocean City, N.J.). Senior designated hitter Michael Rytelewski (Brick, N.J.) scored on the play.
 
Rytelewski finished the game 2-for-5 from the plate with a run scored.
 
Sophomore pitcher Kyle McKelvy (Collegeville, Pa.) falls to 0-3 on the season with eight innings of work. The lefty allowed six runs, only one earned, one walk and fanned five in the game.
 
The Widener baseball team will be back in action on Tuesday as they host Rutgers-Camden at 3:30 pm.
