Baseball Battles TCNJ in Non-Conference Action, 5-3

CHESTER, Pa. (April 1, 2015) – The Widener baseball team earned a 5-3 non-conference victory over The College of New Jersey on Wednesday afternoon.
 
The Pride improved to 8-7 and the Lions fell to 7-8.
 
Sophomore second baseman Justin Healey (Ocean City, N.J.) knocked in the game-winning run in the bottom half of the seventh inning. The right handed bat scored designated hitter Michael Rytelewski (Brick, N.J.) from second base on a single through the left side. Rytelewski led the seventh inning off with a double to deep center field.
 
Healey finished the game 1-for-4 with one hit and one run batted in.
 
Rytelewski ended the day 2-for-3 with one RBI and one run scored. The senior moved several Pride with two sacrifice hits in the non-conference match-up.
 
Center fielder Greg McDonough (Ambler, Pa.) notched one hit and two RBIs for Widener. The sophomore eventually fielded a singled hit by Mark Mari that was relayed to Healey. Ben Varone tried to score from second base but was tagged out by catch Justin Czupryna (Roxbury, N.J.) on the throw by Healey.
 
Czupryna was 2-for-3 with two runs batted in and two runs scored. The sophomore notched his first extra base hit of his career with a double in the bottom of the second inning.
 
Freshman righty Josh Lafferty (Pottstown, Pa.) earned the victory to improve to 2-1 and junior Kevin Scisorek (Hillsborough, N.J.) recorded his first save of the season. Brandon Zachary was dealt the loss for the Lions, and fell to 0-2.
 
Head coach Mike LaRosa and his squad will be back in action on Stevenson in Commonwealth Conference action  on Friday at 3:30 pm in Chester, Pa.
