Football Cruises to 45-3 Rout at Lebanon Valley

Widener put on a clinic with 30 second-half points and the defense once again rose to the occasion in a 45-3 rout of reigning Middle Atlantic Conference champion Lebanon Valley in Annville, PA.

Widener's defense forced Lebanon Valley to punt on its first drive and create a short field with the ball at the visitors' 49 yard line.  A fourth down and five at LVC's 24 yard line did not deter quarterback Seth Klein (Wernersville, PA), who found fellow sophomore Montrell Hicks-Taylor (Newark, DE) on a touchdown pass with 8:59 left in the first quarter for a 7-0 Widener lead.

It was Hicks-Taylor's first career catch.

The Pride then got a massive break when the Dutchmen, on their own 13 yard line, had the snap go over the head of quarterback Brian Murphy.  The latter elected to intentionally kick the ball out of the end zone for a safety, giving Widener a 9-0 lead with 8:12 to play in the first half.

The previous play would not have been possible if not for a huge sack from sophomore Steve Gozur (Hatfield, PA) that put the ball at the 13 yard line.

Widener gave up its first, first-half points all season despite forcing LVC to chew up a lot of time off the clock.  The Dutchmen's drive stalled at the 11 yard line before Matt Smoluk line-drived a 28-yard yard field goal with 3:20 remaining in the half, shrinking the Pride's lead to 9-3.

Just when it looked like the half would end that way, senior All-America Anthony Davis (Upland, PA) provided his weekly magic with 40 seconds left.  With the ball at the 14 yard line on third and goal, Davis reached back for a one-handed catch, eluded several defenders and crossed the goal line for a 15-3 halftime margin.

The defense, which has not permitted a first-half touchdown this season, gave up just 43 yards rushing and 68 yards passing in the opening 30 minutes.

That same defense came out of the locker room with the same intensity as senior Ameer Sorrell (Port Norris, NJ) intercepted Murphy at the 16 yard line, ending the Dutchmen's initial drive of the half.  Davis again lit up the scoreboard after that on another third down score, hauling in a 20-yard touchdown catch in the back of the end zone two minutes into the third quarter for a 22-3 Widener margin.

The lead grew to 24-3 with 9:58 left in the third when a poor snap went over the head of LVC punter Jeff Hacker and senior Jarard Stewart (Bowie, MD) tackled him in the end zone for another safety.

Widener all but ended things with 7:22 left in the third.  Klein threw a 41-yard pass to sophomore Blaine Price (Jefferson, MD) to the LVC eight yard line and, two plays later, senior Terrant Morrison (Smyrna, DE) ran one in from seven yards for a 31-3 Pride lead.

Klein added a five-yard touchdown run early in the fourth, following Sorrell's fumble recovery, and junior Chris Wickes (Bear, DE) contributed a four-yard scoring run.

Klein, who last season had a school-record 40 completions vs. LVC, had another effective game today by completing 14-of-31 passes for 233 yards and three scores.  He now moves into seventh place in school history with 314 career completions.

Davis had four catches for 41 yards with Wickes adding 45 yards rushing off the bench.  Widener owned a comfortable 374-149 edge in total offense and converted 8-of-20 third downs.

Senior Brandon Harper (Blackwood, NJ) continued his explosive play on defense with eight tackles for the Pride, who allowed only 52 rushing yards on 37 carries.  The Pride forced four turnovers on top of the seven they caused last week at Rowan and have eight interceptions this season after getting nine all of last year.

It marks the first time Widener (2-0, 1-0 MAC), which received votes in this week's D3Football.com Top 25 Poll, moved to 2-0 with a pair of road wins for the first time since 1980.  The Pride also upended the Dutchmen for the fourth straight time as well as 18th time in the last 22 meetings.

Brendon Irving had 16 carries for 98 yards and Murphy completed just 9-of-27 passes for 97 yards for the Dutchmen (0-2, 0-1).

Widener plays its home opener next Saturday against Albright, starting at 1:00 pm at Leslie C. Quick Jr. Stadium.
