Softball Gains Split With Lycoming

(Game 1) / (Game 2)

Widener got three early runs in a 4-2 Commonwealth Conference home victory over Lycoming before it was dealt a tough 5-4, 10-inning loss in the nightcap.

Widener (12-6, 4-4 CC) in game one scored three times in the bottom of the first inning for a 3-0 lead.  Senior Jackie Korang (Delran, NJ) roped a two-run single down the right-field line and sophomore Taylor Church (Glen Mills, PA) added an RBI single later in the frame.

Freshman Alexis Schengrund (Hillsborough, NJ) again pitched great in the circle, striking out eight and yielding just one run and three hits over five innings.  In four of her nine starts this season, she has recorded at least eight strikeouts.

Freshman Salina Allebach (Souderton, PA) tossed the final two innings, giving up just an unearned run for her first collegiate save.  Korang and Church each ended the contest with two hits.

Kristi Weaver allowed four runs – three earned – and six hits over six innings for the Warriors.  Katie Pugh had her team's only RBI with an infield single in the fifth.

The Warriors (8-9, 1-5) in game two scored twice in the top of the sixth inning to forge a 3-3 tie.  Chelsey Poorman halved the deficit with an RBI double to right-center field and Nikki Marianelli followed with a run-scoring single to level the contest.

Lycoming grabbed a 4-3 lead in the top of the seventh when Dominique Thomas drove one for a sacrifice fly that plated Kelsey Crabb.  But the Pride answered the bottom of the frame when Liz Antonucci (Nesconset, NY) dropped a perfect bunt that scored fellow freshman Nicole Cavalier (Burlington, NJ) from third.

The 10th inning sees the beginning of the international tiebreaker with a runner placed on second to start the frame.  Weaver began at second, was sacrificed by Crabb to third and scored when Thomas ripped a single down the right-field line.

Widener in its half saw Antonucci reach third on a sacrifice from Ally Horvath (Chalfont, PA), but was thrown on at home on a fielder's choice from fellow freshman Angela Hood (Mullica Twp., NJ).

Hood closed with two hits, her second home run of the year and two RBI.  Schengrund (8-3) struck out six over 4 2/3 innings in a tough loss and freshman Devin Coyne (Chesapeake, VA) also had six strikeouts over 5 1/3 frames.

Marianelli homered in the first inning and closed with two hits.  Weaver (6-5) rebounded in game two to notch three strikeouts over three relief innings.

Widener is home Tuesday against Haverford, starting at 4:00 pm.
