Softball Vanquishes Penn State Brandywine

Widener took both games of a doubleheader, 9-1 and 8-0, over Penn State Brandywine on Wednesday afternoon in Chester, PA.

Led by its pitching staff, Widener (11-5, 3-3) was able to control both game of the non-conference doubleheader. 

Senior Jackie Korang (Delran, NJ) pitched a complete game in the opener, allowing only two hits and one run.  The Pride captain also was struck out six batters and make three putouts in the circle. 

From the Plate, Widener was led by freshman Angela Hood (Mullica Twp., NJ) and sophomore Alie Alkins (Aston, PA).  Batting leadoff, Hood went 2-of-2 with two runs and an RBI.  Alkins, picked second team All-Commonwealth Conference last year, went 2-of-2 with one run and one RBI. 

The second game was led by freshman pitcher Ally Horvath (Chalfont, PA), who allowed only two hits over four innings.  Fellow freshman Devin Coyne (Chesapeake, VA) entered to pitch the final two innings, only to strike out four batters and surrender no hits. 

At bat, Horvath went 2-of-4 with two runs to lead the Pride both offensively and defensively.  Coyne, also making an impact at the plate, went 2-of-2, including a two-run double in the sixth inning down the left-field line.  Coyne has four hits in only seven plate appearances this season, three of which she has stretched into doubles. 
 
Sophomore outfielder Heather Forward (Philadelphia, PA) went 2-of-3 with two runs and a walk in the second contest.  Forward continues to lead the Pride with 14 RBI and eight walks on the season. 

"We played great in every aspect of the game from top to bottom.  Every player got to see the field, and no one left disappointed," said head coach Fred Dohrmann

Widener will be back in action on Saturday for a home doubleheader against conference foe Lycoming beginning at 1:00 pm.
