Softball Splits Two With Stevenson

(Game 1) / (Game 2)

After falling to Stevenson, 5-1, Widener returned with a vengeance to take the following game, 8-2, in Commonwealth Conference play on Saturday afternoon in Owings Mills, MD.

Freshman hurler Devin Coyne (Chesapeake, VA) pitched a solid four innings with two earned runs and one strikeout in the first game, but the Pride offense could not manage a run until the top of the seventh inning.

With the score at 5-0 in favor of the Mustangs, junior Carissa Harris (Douglassville, PA) led off the seventh inning with a single to left center and advanced to third base on a walk from sophomore Taylor Church (Glen Mills, PA) and a single from freshman Bree Vanreenen (Elkton, MD).  With the bases loaded, freshman Salina Allebach (Souderton, PA) pinch hit and crushed a single to center field, bringing home Harris, and putting the tying run at the plate with one out in the inning.  The Pride could not capitalize on the opportunity and the first game went into the books as a 5-1 loss.

On the mound, freshman Ally Horvath (Chalfont, PA) pitched the complete seven innings to improve to 3-0 in the second game of the doubleheader.  Horvath allowed only two earned runs and walked none.

Widener (15-7, 5-5 CC), which is fifth in the league, scored three runs in the top of the first inning that began when Harris singled through the left side that drove home freshman Angela Hood (Mullica Twp., NJ).  After an error on the play, sophomore Heather Forward (Philadelphia, PA) scored and Harris advanced all the way to third.

On the next pitch, Church smashed a ball into left field that scored Harris and gave the Pride the three run lead.

Widener added two more runs in the fifth when freshman Liz Antonucci (Nesconset, NY) doubled into left field to advance Church to third base.  After a throwing error on the next at bat, both Church and Antonucci advanced home.

The Pride secured the victory with one run in the sixth and two in the seventh.  Hood finished going 3-of-4 with two runs and an RBI, and Antonucci went a perfect 4-of-4 with two runs in the contest.

Widener managed 14 hits and no errors in game two.

Widener returns on "Strike Out Cancer Night" on Tuesday at 5:00 pm against Cabrini in Chester, PA.
