Softball Sweeps a Pair From Haverford

(Game 1) / (Game 2)

Freshman Ally Horvath (Chalfont, PA) tossed a one-hit shutout in game two for a 1-0 victory after Widener won the opener from its doubleheader with Haverford, 3-2, in Chester, PA.

Horvath was the story in the nightcap, retiring the first nine batters she faced before giving up a leadoff single to Jill Schnall in the fourth.  Horvath faced just one batter above the minimum over seven innings, getting a strikeout with no walks.

Widener scored its run in the fourth.  Senior Jackie Korang (Delran, NJ) had a leadoff double to right-center field and reach third on a single from freshman Nicole Cavalier (Burlington, NJ).  Cavalier then stole second after shortstop Lauren Touey cut off the throw, but then threw away the ball in trying to pickoff Korang that allowed the latter to score.

Horvath (2-0) then retired the last nine batters to give Widener (14-6) its seventh victory in its last eight outings.  Sophomores Alie Alkins (Aston, PA) and Taylor Church (Glen Mills, PA) each had two hits.

Kendall Chambers (2-2) allowed an unearned run and six hits over four innings for the Fords (14-8).

Widener in game one took a 1-0 lead in the first when sophomore Heather Forward (Philadelphia, PA) scored on a throwing error.  It got two more in the third on RBI singles from junior Carissa Harris (Douglassville, PA) and Church.

Haverford got two back in the sixth on Stephanie Wolfson's RBI groundout and Touey's run-scoring infield single.  It put runners on second and third in the seventh with none out, but the rally was all but killed when Schnall was caught in a rundown between third base and home plate before being tagged out by Harris.

Jen DiCandilo struck out looking and Dayle Comerford flied out to end it.

Hillsborough, NJ freshman Alexis Schengrund (9-3) struck out five over five innings, allowing just four hits and two walks.  She also has 72 strikeouts on the season, moving her into 10th place on Widener's single-single season list.

Claire Fitzgerald (2-3) was tabbed for three runs – one earned – and five hits over four innings with four walks for the Fords.  Julie Garlick had two hits.

"We had two powerful ball games on our part," Widener coach Fred Dohrmann said.  "Excellent defense with good pitching and timely hitting allowed us to take two from Haverford.  I was very happy with our play."

Widener hits the road Saturday to visit Stevenson for a 1:00 pm start.
