Barth Solid on the Mound for Baseball in 3-1 Victory over Dominican (IL)

(box score)

Junior Robert Barth (Norristown, PA) pitched another gem in getting his second victory of the year for Widener, which ended its Florida trip with a 3-1 win over Dominican (IL) in Fort Myers.

Barth (2-0), a second team All-Commonwealth Conference pick last season, was in control for his first complete game of the season after getting five in 2013.  Today, he had a career-best nine strikeouts and permitted just an unearned run and four hits over nine innings.

Barth, who upended Gallaudet on February 22, walked just one and only faced six batters above the minimum.

Widener (6-2) grabbed a 2-0 lead in the top of the fifth inning.  Freshmen Michael Elfreth (Washington Twp., NJ) and Bob Barnett (Glenolden, PA) reached on singles and Barnett was erased on a fielder's choice from junior Matt Scherer (Havertown, PA).  After Scherer stole second, senior Michael Riverso (Philadelphia, PA) drove them both home on a single to center field.

Dominican got within 2-1 in the last of the frame.  Joe Lyons got a one-out single, took third on an error and then scored on another error off a batted ball from Thomas Smith.

The Pride got an insurance marker in the ninth for a 3-1 margin.  Junior Michael Rytelewski (Brick, NJ) singled, reached second base on an error and crossed home when Barnett lined a two-out single to right field.

Barnett and Elfreth closed with three hits apiece and Rytelewski had two for the Pride, who ended with 11 hits.  Barnett and Scherer have a hit in all eight contests this season and Riverso is on a seven-game hitting streak.

Dominican (2-3) had its modest two-game winning streak halted.

Widener, which went 5-2 on the trip, is on the road next Wednesday to visit Rutgers-Camden for a 3:30 pm start in Camden, NJ.
