Baseball Stays Red Hot in Florida With Fourth Straight Win; 11-5 Over Wilmington (OH)

(box score)

The combination of great pitching and great hitting again was in place for Widener, which posted its fourth consecutive victory with an 11-5 triumph over Wilmington (OH) in Fort Myers, FL.

Senior Glenn Stanners (Brookhaven, PA) came out of the bullpen to give the Pride (5-1) some much needed relief.  Entering in the second inning, Stanners went the rest of the way by striking out five and yielding just a run and four hits over 7 1/3 innings.

Freshman Michael Elfreth (Washington Twp., NJ) had started every game at third base to date, but a move today to shortstop did not deter him.  Elfreth batted 3-for-4 with a two-run double in the second inning, a stolen base and three runs.

Freshman Justin Healey (Ocean City, NJ) went 3-for-5 with a double, a stolen base and a run with senior Michael Riverso (Philadelphia, PA) going 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI in reaching base four times.

Edward Speakman (Chichester, PA) went 2-for-4 with a double and three RBI with fellow junior Josh Everett (Harveys Lake, PA) getting an RBI and reaching base three times.

Junior Matt Scherer (Havertown, PA) and freshman Bob Barnett (Glenolden, PA) each are riding six-game hitting streaks and Riverso is on a five-game run.

The Quakers fall to 0-6.

Widener now is 4-1 on the trip with two games left.  This assures the squad a winning record on its Florida journey for the fourth time in the last five seasons.

Widener is back in action Thursday against Ohio Northern for a noon start.
