Schengrund Wins Twice, Softball Dominates Gwynedd Mercy

Widener's offensive prowess proved too much for Gwynedd Mercy as it took both games of the doubleheader by scores of 14-0 and 8-2 on Saturday afternoon in Chester, PA.

Widener (4-2) was jumpstarted in the first game off a solo home run from sophomore Alie Alkins (Aston, PA) in the bottom of the first inning. Alkins scored three runs within the doubleheader, bringing her season total to a team-high nine runs and a slugging percentage of .789.

The Pride then took off with eight runs in the second inning, four runs in the third and one more in the fourth.

Freshman infielder Bree Vanreenen (Elkton, MD) managed an RBI single and a two-RBI double in the second inning alone. Vanreenen finished 2-of-3 with one run and three RBI.

Senior captain Jackie Korang (Delran, NJ) hit a triple in the third inning down the right field line to bring home three runs. Korang went 2-of-3 with two runs and a team-high four RBI's in the opening home game of the season.

Freshman pitcher Alexis Schengrund (Hillsborough, NJ) was awarded with the victory after pitching three innings with no hits, no runs and five strikeouts.

In the second game, Gwynedd Mercy scored first as Alexis Deal hit a sacrifice fly that brought home Ave' Bolli in the first inning.

Widener answered with two runs in the bottom of the second. Junior first baseman Carissa Harris (Douglassville, PA) reached on an error by the first baseman which drove home Korang. Harris would later score off an RBI single from freshman Liz Antonucci (Nesconset, NY) down the right field line.

The Griffins tied the score in the fourth when Nikki Canfield singled to left field to bring home Sarah Rosetti.

The Pride quickly regained the lead with two runs in the bottom of the inning. Vanreenen doubled over the center fielder's head to bring home freshman Nicole Cavalier (Burlington, NJ) followed by an RBI single to left field from sophomore Heather Forward (Philadelphia, PA).

Three more runs in the fifth inning and one more in the sixth clinched the victory.

Schengrund was credited with her second win of the day after entering in the fourth inning with the scored tied at 2-2, and pitching a scoreless 1 2/3 innings with two strikeouts.

Widener returns to action at home on Tuesday for a doubleheader against cross-county rival Swarthmore at 4:00 pm.
