Baseball Goes 1-1 in Doubleheader Against Illinois College

Widener fell to Illinois College 6-4, but returned to win the second game of the doubleheader 5-4 in Fort Myers, FL on Saturday.

In the opening game of the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic, Widener (2-1) led Illinois College 4-1 in the sixth inning. However, the Blueboys returned to score five runs in the bottom of the inning and come away with the victory.

The Pride were led by senior Glenn Stanners (Brookhaven, PA) on the mound. Stanners pitched five solid innings with four strikeouts and two earned runs to garner a no decision.

Leading the team at bat were returning starters from 2013, junior Matt Scherer (Havertown, PA) and senior Michael Riverso (Philadelphia, PA). Scherer went 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run with Riverso scoring a run and reaching base all four times on walks.

Freshman outfielder Bob Barnett (Glenolden, PA) went 1-for-3 with an RBI, a run and a stolen base. Fellow newcomer and transfer junior Michael Rytlewski (Brick, NJ) also had an RBI on a suicide squeeze in the third inning.

In the second contest down 4-3 in the seventh inning, the Pride rallied to score two runs for the win. Sophomore pinch-hitter Joe Santone (Blackwood, NJ) drove in the winning run on a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded and one out to secure the victory.

Freshman pitcher Kyle McKelvy (Collegeville, PA) threw a complete game with seven strikeouts and two earned runs for his first collegiate win.

Riverso continued to show his ability to get on base by crushing a triple, reaching base two other times and scoring twice.

Scherer went 1-for-3 for the second time, and brought in one run on a sacrifice fly. Fellow junior Edward Speakman, (Chichester, PA) also went 1-for-3, with an RBI double and a run.

Senior infielder Kyle Summers (Mohnton, PA) went 2-for-3 in the second contest to lead the Pride in hits.

Widener will continue the Gene Cusic Classic on Sunday against Thiel at 1:00 pm.
