Women's Basketball Notches 77-61 Victory at Hood

(box score)

Widener received a pair of double-doubles and another solid rebounding effort for a 77-61 Commonwealth Conference victory over Hood in Frederick, MD.

Widener (12-9, 7-7 CC) in the first half scored 10 straight points to open a 41-26 lead with 2:23 remaining.  Senior Joanna Persiano (Ventnor, NJ) and sophomore Brianna Wylie (Mount Laurel, NJ) each scored three points in the run.

Down 43-31 at halftime, Hood (5-15, 2-11) charged out of the locker room a different team by scoring nine straight points over the first four minutes for a 43-40 deficit.  Verkia Smith netted five points in the spurt.

But the Pride put away things by using a 21-5 run over seven minutes to open a 72-52 cushion with 3:39 to play.  Senior Jen Egee (Ridley Park, PA) continued her scoring binge with eight points and sophomore Sarah Engman (Bryn Mawr, PA) ended it on back-to-back, old-fashioned three-point plays.

Egee again was the story, scoring 19 points and grabbing 14 rebounds for her fifth double-double of the season to go with shooting 10-for-10 from the foul line over 38 minutes.  She entered the week 11th in the country in both scoring and 3-pointers per contest.

Wylie had 14 points on 6-of-9 shooting and 10 rebounds for her third double-double of the season over just 18 minutes.  Persiano closed with 13 points and three 3-pointers with junior Courtney Colella (Cinnaminson, NJ) getting eight points and seven rebounds.

Widener owned a 53-32 rebounding edge after recording a 55-31 advantage in Wednesday's home victory over Stevenson.

Widener is home Wednesday against Elizabethtown, starting at 6:00 pm.
