Men's Basketball Makes It Three Straight Wins With 82-77 Victory at Hood

(box score)

Sophomore Laron Byrd (Philadelphia, PA) hit the go-ahead free throws with 37 seconds left and Widener held Hood to just one innocuous basket in the last 3 1/2 minutes for an 82-77 Commonwealth Conference win in Frederick, MD.

Down as many as 13 points in the second half and trailing 74-67 with 3:32 left, Widener (11-10, 5-9 CC) scored seven of the next eight points to close to 75-74 with 1:19 left.  Senior Rob McPherson (Bowie, MD) made the difference in that spurt with a layup and two free throws.

Hood (15-5, 9-4) took as much time as it could off the clock on its next possession and worked the ball to leading scorer Cameron Cook, who missed a 3-pointer that Widener sophomore David Nicholson (Odenton, MD) rebounded.  The Pride's next possession saw Byrd get fouled by Davon Hill and the subsequent free throws with 37 seconds to play gave the visitors a 76-75 lead.

The Blazers' following possession saw senior Andrew Radomicki (Media, PA) come up with a steal that led to McPherson's two free throws with 10 seconds remaining for a 78-75 margin.

Hood now was looking to tie the game, but never got the opportunity as Hill's turnover gave the ball back to Widener.  McPherson canned four free throws sandwiched around Cook's jumper for the final.

Junior Greg Lawson (Mount Holly, NJ) for the second straight game had a career day in rebounding, getting 23 to go with 13 points.  The rebounds breaks the record at BB&T Arena and comes after he hauled in 22 rebounds Wednesday against Stevenson.

McPherson got a personal-best 31 points for the fourth time this season and second against Hood, going 9-of-19 from the floor and 12-for-12 from the line.  He also reached that total January 4 at Stevenson and December 4 at Elizabethtown to go with the January 18 contest.

Sophomore Mark Pryzbylkowski (New Egypt, NJ) scored 11 points and Byrd added nine for the Pride, who shot 48 percent (27-of-56) from the field and went 22-for-29 from the line.

Cameron Cook scored 23 points, Chris Cook netted 14 and Hill added 13 for the Blazers, who shot only 39 percent (22-of-57) from the floor.

Widener is home Wednesday against Elizabethtown, beginning at 8:00 pm.
