Women's Basketball Rebounds Its Way Past Stevenson, 68-63

(box score) / (Play 4Kay)

Widener's tremendous rebounding led it to a 68-63 defeat over Commonwealth Conference foe Stevenson on Wednesday night in the "Play 4Kay" game at Schwartz Center.

Widener (11-9, 6-7 CC) held a huge 55-31 rebounding advantage over Stevenson.  The Pride won the previous meeting between the two teams in a similar fashion, 67-63, back in early January.

The first half consisted of solid play from both teams as Widener held a slight advantage for the majority of the period. Going into halftime, the Pride led 33-30 as senior Jen Egee (Ridley Park, PA) recorded nine points and eight rebounds.  She finished with 17 points and 11 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season.

Widener skyrocketed to a 14-point lead nine minutes into the second half as junior Kristina Reiter (Sewell, NJ) went on a tear for eight points. Reiter finished with a season-high 20 points on 8-of-11 shooting to go with seven rebounds and five assists.

Stevenson made a great comeback to tie the game at 61, but Egee's two layups in the final minute secured the win.

Sophomore forward Brianna Wylie (Mount Laurel, NJ) and junior center Courtney Colella (Cinnaminson, NJ) dominated the boards with eight and six rebounds, respectively. Offensively, Wylie added 10 points and Colella went a perfect 4-of-4 for 11 points.

Off the bench, junior Paige Davis (Newark, DE) brought down five rebounds and junior Caitlin Horan (Morristown, NJ) scored five points, recorded four rebounds and blocked a season-high three shots.

Stevenson (11-9, 9-4) was led by Ty Bender with 17 points and six rebounds, along with five assists and a monstrous five steals. Kayla Kelly added 16 points and five rebounds for the Mustangs.

Widener during the contest celebrated "Play 4Kay" for the seventh straight year and raised money for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund.  The Pride wore pink jerseys for a fifth straight season.

Widener returns to conference action Saturday at Hood.  The women begin at 1:00 pm and the men go at 3:00 pm.
