Women's Basketball Falls to Messiah, 68-54, in Conference Action

Widener fell short, 68-54, to Commonwealth Conference foe Messiah on Tuesday night in Grantham, PA. 
 
Widener (13-11, 8-9 CC) held an early 7-2 lead thanks to four points from junior Courtney Colella (Cinnaminson, NJ).  Colella finished with eight points and brought down five rebounds against the Falcons. 
 
Messiah took the lead and begin to pull away from Widener, holding a 32-15 halftime lead.

In the second half, senior Joanna Persiano (Ventnor, NJ) scored 15 points to bring Widener back into the fight, but the 94 percent free-throw shooting of the Falcons proved too much for the Pride to overcome.  Persiano had another impressive night by scoring a team-high 17 points and dishing four assists. 
 
Senior Jen Egee (Ridley Park, PA) despite the loss had a night of great achievements.  Egee scored a trio of 3-pointers to match her school-record of 68 made 3-pointers in a season.  Her 15 points brought her season total to 503 points and career total to 1,279.  Egee now ranks fifth in school history in both single season and career points. 
 
Sophomore forward Brianna Wylie (Mount Laurel, NJ) scored nine points in only 13 minutes after falling into early foul trouble.  Wylie went 2-of-2 from the field and 5-for-6 from the free-throw line.
 
Taylor Miller led Messiah (17-7, 13-4) with 14 points and six assists, and Chelsea Danel recorded nine points, three rebounds and three assists.  Defensively, the Falcons were led by Katelyn Vanderhoff with seven rebounds to go along with 10 points. 
 
Widener travels to Arcadia on Saturday to take part in the final game of the regular season.  The women play at 1:00 pm and the men follow at 3:00 pm.
