Men's Basketball Wins Its Fourth Straight, 74-69 Over Elizabethtown

(box score)

Widener got many all-around great performances and picked up its fourth straight triumph with a 74-69 Commonwealth Conference win over Elizabethtown at Schwartz Center.

Elizabethtown (8-14, 5-10 CC), which trailed by as many as 13 points in the first half, grabbed a 63-61 lead with 4:07 left on Phil Wenger's jumper.  But Andrew Radomicki (Media, PA) hit the first of two big 3-pointers for the Pride down the stretch, this one with 3:44 to play for a 64-63 lead.

After a steal by Widener sophomore Laron Byrd (Philadelphia, PA), senior Rob McPherson (Bowie, MD) canned a free throw with 3:07 remaining for a 65-63 contest.  Byrd then came up with another steal and hit twice from the stripe with 2:25 left for a 67-63 lead.

Even Hathaway then missed a 3-pointer for the Blue Jays before the Pride's biggest possession of the game.  Radomicki drove down the lane looking for help in the block.  Instead he peeked to the top of the key and found McPherson, who canned a huge 3-pointer with 1:34 left for a 70-63 contest.

Ryan Borzager nailed a 3-pointer for the Blue Jays on the next possession, but McPherson's layup with 65 seconds left made it 72-66 and all but iced things.

McPherson played another great game with 23 points on 7-of-12 shooting, six 3-pointers to tie his career best and six rebounds for Widener, which shot 50 percent (11-of-22) from the field in the second half and 47 percent (23-of-49) overall.  Junior Dillon Fields (Medford, NJ) scored 15 points with five assists, Radomicki had 12 points and Byrd posted one of his finest outings with 10 points, six assists, six steals and four rebounds.

"It was a great team win and a great team effort," Widener coach Chris Carideo said.  "This win means a lot going into Saturday."

Will Schlosser scored 18 points off the bench, Lee Eckert netted 16 and Andrew Mantz had eight and eight rebounds for Elizabethtown, which shot 47 percent (27-of-57) from the floor and owned a 38-26 rebounding edge.

Widener (12-10, 6-9) gained a huge edge on the foul line, shooting 15-for-25 with Elizabethtown going only 4-for-6.

Widener is home Saturday on Senior Day against Alvernia, starting at 3:00 pm.
