Women's Track and Field Suffers Close Loss, 61-57, To DeSales

In its first dual meet of 2014, Widener squared off against DeSales and was dealt a hard-fought 61-57 loss at Schwartz Center.

With an outstanding meet, junior Rachel Heisler (Boyertown, PA) won the weight throw with a distance of 47" 1.5", defeating DeSales' Megan Warner by almost five feet. That distance places Heisler third overall in Widener track history, and only 18 inches behind the record set back in 2008.

Also in the field events, senior Erica Szpynda (Berwick, PA) won the shot put with a distance of 43' 9.25", three inches short of her personal record. Pole vaulting junior Amber Char (Southampton, PA) also walked away in first place by clearing a height of 8' 11.75".

Middle-distance sophomore Taylor Englert (Pottsville, PA) finished ahead of 10 Bulldogs and won the 800-meter run in 2:33.95.

Junior sprinter Brittany Diehl (Havertown, PA) pulled off a close race in the 400-meter dash by running 1:03.64, defeating DeSales' Amanda Miller by less than a second. In another close race, the 55-meter dash, freshman Briana McKnight (Marcus Hook, PA) ran 9.71 seconds , and placed second behind DeSales' Janette Berger by 0.25 seconds.

The men's and women's teams will be back in action Saturday at the Haverford Invitational, beginning at noon.
