Women's Basketball Gets it Done Against Hood, 71-60

(box score)

A strong team performance led Widener past Hood, 71-60, in Commonwealth Conference play on Saturday afternoon at Schwartz Center.

Widener (10-5, 5-3 CC) had nine separate players register an assist, as the Pride played dominantly and unselfishly against Hood.

Hood jumped to an early lead, but Widener stormed back and tied the score with eight minutes remaining in the half. By the time halftime rolled around, the Pride held a 36-28 advantage.

Widener held that momentum and increased the lead to 21 points with eight minutes remaining.  Hood began a comeback, but Widener held on to win the first of two meetings between the schools this season.

Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week Jen Egee (Ridley Park, PA) secured her third double-double of the season. With 18 points and 11 rebounds, Egee continued her dominance on both sides of the court. She added three assists, one block and three steals to her credit.  "We had a tough loss to Alvernia on Wednesday, but we were not going to let that effect us today. We went out there and went hard from the opening whistle to the final horn," said Egee.

Egee now stands at 204 career 3-pointers, tied for fifth with Paula Fritz of Messiah for fifth in Middle Atlantic Conference history.

One rebound short of a double-double, junior Courtney Colella (Cinnaminson, NJ) went 7-of-12 for 15 points and nine rebounds. Colella also contributed three steals, one assist and one block.

Fellow junior Kristina Reiter (Sewell, NJ) scored nine points and went 5-for-6 from the free throw line.

Senior guard Joanna Persiano (Ventnor, NJ) led the Pride with five assists to go with her seven points. Off the bench, sophomore Brianna Wylie (Mount Laurel, NJ) went 4-of-6 for eight points and three rebounds.

Hood (4-11, 1-7) was led by Danni Medovich with 25 points on 9-of-16 shooting and 6-of-11 from beyond the arc. Rachel Wiley led the team with seven rebounds to go with seven points.

Widener will be back in action at Schwartz Center on Wednesday against Messiah.  The women begin at 6:00 pm and the men follow at 8:00 pm.
