Softball Splits With Stevenson

Widener rallied three hits together for three runs in the bottom of the seventh to win the first game 7-5 before losing a close 3-1 game two against Stevenson in today's Commonwealth Conference doubleheader.
 
Runs were scored in every inning except for the sixth, started off in the first inning with two scored by Stevenson and one by the Pride in the bottom half. The Mustangs (12-10, 4-6 CC) strung together three this to score two, but the rally was ended when catcher Shelby Mackintosh (Lumberton, NJ) and second baseman Colleen Orsborn (Drexel Hill, PA) teamed up to pick off a sleeping runner at second. In the bottom half of the inning Mackintosh hit a double to score senior Jen Nance (Lansdowne, PA), who got onto first by drawing a walk.
 
Widener (8-14, 2-8) tied the game with one run in the second when center fielder Alie Alkins (Aston, PA) hit her first career home run over the left-center fence. After holding the Mustangs in the third, the Pride scored two to take the lead. Carissa Harris (Douglassville, PA) reached first on a fielder's choice and advanced to second on a shallow single hit by Jackie Korang (Delran, NJ). An error by the Mustangs loaded the bases, and pitcher Christine Mattis (Drexel Hill, PA) drew a walk to bring in a run. Jamie Williams (South River, NJ) hit a single to center field to score Korang easily before the inning ended.
 
Between the fourth and fifth innings Stevenson brought in three runs to take the lead, 5-4. Coming into the bottom of the seventh with one out away, Korang took the first pitch to left field for a double and advanced to third on a wide throw from the cut-off. Alkins came through with a double of her own to right-center to bring Korang home to tie the game. With two balls and no strikes against her, Mattis took a pitch over the right-center fence to allow Widener to take the first game 7-5.
 
Williams, brought in to pitch three innings of relief, was credited with the win after giving up four hits and one run. Mattis threw for four innings and gave up four runs on five hits. Laura Welch takes the loss for Stevenson, throwing 3.1 innings and giving up three earned runs.
 
The second game of the doubleheader remained scoreless until Tiffany Kahl scored in the third inning on a double down the left field line hit by Kaitlyn Seger.
 
Great pitching and tight defenses kept it a 1-0 game until Widener scored an unearned run in the fifth inning. Alkins hit a double to the left field corner and advanced to third on a throwing error by the catcher on a pickoff attempt with two outs away. Freshman Heather Forward (Philadelphia, PA) hit a one-hopper to the left fielder to bring in the run and tie the game.
 
The game was sent into extra innings and was scoreless until the top of the ninth inning. With one out, center fielder Lindsay Kuczak was hit by a pitch on the back of her foot and advanced to second on an infield hit by Brianna Dieter that Orsborn fielded up the middle but had no play on. A fielding error allowed one run to score and a sacrifice fly hit by Kahl scored another before Widener was able to get out of the inning.
 
In the bottom of the ninth Widener had one hit, but was unable to bring any runs across.
 
Brianna Pichalski is credited with the win, giving up one run and four hits over nine innings. Korang receives the loss, giving up three runs -- two earned -- and 11 hits over nine innings.
 
Between the two games Alkins hit 3-for-5 with a home run and two doubles, had two RBI and scored three times. Mackintosh had three hits and one RBI, Korang hit 4-for-8 with two doubles and scored twice, and Mattis finished 2-for-4, including a home run, with three RBI.
 
Widener travels to Williamsport, PA on Sunday to take on Lycoming in another Commonwealth Conference doubleheader, with the first game beginning at 1:00 pm.
