Softball Gains Split at Swarthmore

(Game 1) / (Game 2)

Junior Jackie Korang (Delran, NJ) cracked a three-run homer in game two and senior Shelby Mackintosh (Lumberton, NJ) reached 100 career hits as Widener notched an 11-2 win at Swarthmore following a 6-4 loss.

Widener broke open game two with five runs in the fifth for a 7-2 lead.  Mackintosh lined an RBI single, sophomore Carissa Harris (Douglassville, PA) added a run-scoring fielder's choice and freshman Alie Alkins (Aston, PA) lined an RBI single.  Alkins and Harris scored later in the frame on an error by third baseman Rose Pitkin.

The Pride then tacked on four more in the sixth for the run-rule win.  Mackintosh had another RBI single and Korang came through with her first career long ball on a shot to left center.

Mackintosh rapped three hits as part of the Pride's 14-hit attack, had four in the doubleheader and bumped her career total to 101.  Drexel Hill, PA senior Christine Mattis (3-5) permitted just two runs – one earned – and three hits over six innings.

"Jackie has been coming on strong," Widener coach Fred Dohrmann said.  "It was great to see get a hold of one. Shelby has been a consistently strong hitter from her freshman year on. This is a big accomplishment and we are all very happy for her."

Christen Boas Hayes allowed six runs – five earned – and eight hits over four innings for Swarthmore (13-9).

The Garnet in game one took a 2-0 lead in the first on a two-run single from Danielle Seltzer.  The lead grew to 3-0 in the second on an infield single by Clara Obstfeld.

Swarthmore made it 4-0 in the fourth as Emma Madarasz lined an RBI single up the middle.  Nicole Aaron cracked a two-run long ball in the sixth for a 6-0 margin.

Widener then made things real interesting in the seventh with two outs.  Freshman Emily Corson (Millville, NJ), Colleen Orsborn (Drexel Hill, PA), fellow senior Kristina Kenney (Philadelphia, PA) and sophomore Jamie Williams (South River, NJ) all had consecutive RBI singles to make it a 6-4 contest.  But freshman Heather Forward (Philadelphia, PA) flied out to right to end it.

Philadelphia junior Liz Carpino (1-4) was charged with six runs – five earned – and 10 hits over 4 2/3 innings for the Pride (7-13).

Melissa O'Connor gave up four runs – three earned – and five hits over seven innings for the Garnet.  Suness Jones had three hits and Aaron added two.

Widener is home Saturday against Stevenson, starting at 1:00 pm.
