Softball Splits With Neumann

(Game 1) / (Game 2)

Widener traveled to Aston, PA today to take on Neumann and lost the first game 6-0 before coming back in the second game with seven hits to win 3-0.

In game one, Widener only was able to get three hits on winning pitcher Lauren Wilkie (12-4). Freshman center fielder Alie Alkins (Aston, PA) had a hit in each of her two at-bats and freshman catcher Taylor Church (Glen Mills, PA) went 1-for-2 with a single.

The Knights (25-13) scored two runs in the third inning off junior pitcher Liz Carpino (Philadelphia, PA), one of which was unearned. Neumann tacked on four more runs between the fifth and sixth inning off of freshman relief pitcher Jamie Williams (South River, NJ), which was more than enough as the Pride was retired in order in the top of the seventh inning.  Carpino (5-7) is credited with the loss and struck out two batters.

Widener (17-19) turned its game around in the nightcap, scoring the first two runs of the game in the top of the second inning, which would have been enough to give senior starting pitcher Christine Mattis (Drexel Hill, PA) the win.

In the fifth inning, Alkins led off with a single and advanced to third on a right field double hit by senior Jen Nance (Lansdowne, PA). Senior shortstop Casey Hargadon (Wallingford, PA) hit a fly ball to left field to score Alkins for the third and final run of the game.

Mattis (5-6) allowed just five hits in seven innings of work and struck out three of the 27 batters she faced. Allyson Parris (10-5) is saddled with the loss after giving up two earned runs in two innings. Senior Kristina Kenney (Philadelphia, PA) had an RBI and went 2-for-3 in the second game with a double and one run scored. Alkins hit 5-for-7 on the day.

On Saturday, Widener hosts Messiah for a Commonwealth Conference doubleheader, beginning at 1:00 pm, and also celebrates its eight graduating seniors.
