Softball Handed Two Losses at Hood

(Game 1) / (Game 2)

Widener's chances of making the Commonwealth Conference Tournament took a major hit as it dropped two contests at Hood, losing the first 8-0 before a 4-3, eight-inning setback in Frederick, MD.

Hood (20-15, 8-7 CC) took control of game one with five runs in the bottom of the second inning for a 5-0 lead.  Jackie Wenzel, Casey Dunn, Amy Hagerdon and Carly Farr all had RBI singles in the frame and Hagerdon later scored on a field error.

The Blazers ended the game via run rule in the sixth when Wenzel drew a bases-loaded walk.

Keerstie Robinson got the victory, striking out two and allowing just six hits over six scoreless innings.

Freshman Alie Alkins (Aston, PA) had two hits for the Pride.  Delran, NJ junior Jackie Korang (5-6) was charged with six runs – five earned – and nine hits over 3 1/3 innings.

In game two, Widener plated three runs in the top of the sixth for a 3-2 lead.  Senior Casey Hargadon (Wallingford, PA) lined an RBI single that scored Korang and Alkins also crossed home following an error by left fielder Jackie Yurchak.  Sophomore Carissa Harris (Douglassville, PA) gave Widener the lead with a run-scoring single to center.

But Hood tied things in the seventh on Wenzel's one-out double to left center.  In the eighth, Farr led off with a single, took second on a wild pitch and scored on Ashley Fourcade's single to left center.

Hargadon had two hits to run her hitting streak to nine and Philadelphia junior Liz Carpino (5-6) allowed four runs and 10 hits over 7 1/3 innings for the Pride.

Robinson notched her second win of the day after permitting three runs – two earned – and seven hits over eight innings.

Widener (16-18, 6-10) sits eighth in the conference and needs help to make the five-team league tournament.  Its regular season ends Saturday at home against Messiah.

The Pride are back in action Wednesday at Neumann, starting at 3:30 pm.
