Softball Drops Two at Elizabethtown

Widener in the first game at Commonwealth Conference foe Elizabethtown was handed a tough 3-2 loss in nine innings before dropping a 5-1 contest in the second game in Elizabethtown, PA.
 
Widener (6-6, 1-3 CC) in game one took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning when sophomore Carissa Harris (Douglassville, PA) singled and eventually scored on an RBI single from senior Shelby Mackintosh (Lumberton, NJ).  The margin grew to 2-0 in the sixth on a run-scoring single from senior Jen Nance (Lansdowne, PA).
 
But the Blue Jays scored twice in the seventh with two outs to force extra innings.  Lindsey Cooper singled up the middle for a one-run game and Whitney Breneman crossed home later in the inning on an error for a 2-2 tie.
 
Elizabethtown (8-8, 2-4) then won it in the ninth.  Amanda Sheckard hit a leadoff single, took second on a passed ball, reached third on Courtney Comstock's fly out and scored on Breneman's sacrifice fly.
 
Nance and freshman Heather Forward (Philadelphia, PA) had two hits apiece for the Pride.  Delran, NJ junior Jackie Korang (2-1) took the tough loss after yielding three runs – one earned – and seven hits over 8 2/3 innings.
 
Comstock, Breneman and Cooper represented the first three hitters for Elizabethtown and all had two hits.  Laura Tomasetti (3-5) permitted two runs and eight hits over nine innings with four strikeouts.
 
Widener in the second game took a 1-0 lead in the first when Harris scored on an illegal pitch.  Elizabethtown tied it in the third when Cooper lined an RBI double to left center.
 
The Blue Jays grabbed a 2-1 lead in the fourth when Sheckard lined a run-scoring single to center.  The home team then scored three times in the sixth for a 5-1 margin, keyed by Becky Becher's RBI double to left and Jordan Nowacki's sacrifice fly.
 
Harris had two hits in the game and three on the day.  Drexel Hill, PA senior Christine Mattis (2-2) was charged with two runs and seven hits over four innings.
 
Cooper and Keli Krause rapped two hits apiece for the Blue Jays.  Krause struck out 10 over seven innings, permitting one run and four hits.
 
Widener on Monday is scheduled to play at Eastern, starting at 3:00 pm.
