Men’s Basketball Defeats Elizabethtown, 81-77, In Overtime

(box score)
Sophomore Greg Lawson (Mount Holly, NJ) had career highs of 22 points and 21 rebounds for Widener, which survived Commonwealth Conference foe Elizabethtown tying the contest at the end of regulation to post an 81-77 overtime road victory.

The first three minutes saw the score quickly going back and forth, left sitting at 7-7 after Lawson hit a jump shot. Junior Andrew Radomicki (Media, PA) sank a 3-pointer following a pass from Lawson with just under 15 minutes remaining in the first half to give Widener a push ahead of the Blue Jays. With the score still only separated by a margin of just a couple of points, Logan Murray (Westmont, NJ) completed a three-point play by making a layup and the free throw that was awarded as a result to put some space between the two teams.

Midway through the first half the score saw Widener in the lead by four. Three minutes passed with no scoring until Rodney Brown (Lake Valley, NJ) sank two free throws. In the final six minutes of the first half, Widener scored 16 points compared to Elizabethtown's 10, including a 30-second span in which each team made two 3-pointers. Two successful free throws by Lawson with less one minute left sent the game into the halftime break with the score sitting 40-30 in favor of Widener.

The second half saw an exact opposite score, with Widener (6-16, 5-10 CC) gaining 30 points and Elizabethtown 40. Elizabethtown started to close the gap right away, with Joe Renzi hitting a 3-pointer and teammate Andrew Mantz making a layup about a minute apart. Dillon Fields (Medford, NJ) got the scoring started in the second half for the Pride by making a jumper with about 17 minutes remaining in regulation play and making two free throws about a minute later.

With five minutes expired from the second half, Bob Makor (Philadelphia, PA) fed freshman David Nicholson (Odenton, MD), who then sank a 3-pointer just before Blue Jay Tyler Simpkiss made one of his own to close the gap to a seven point margin. At the 12-minute mark, Makor made two free throws and Field sank a layup to give Widener a ten point lead, but two three-pointers and a jumper brought the Blue Jays within two points of a tied game. Two successful free throws from Nicholson allowed Widener to stay in the lead by one after Blue Jay Ben Cable make a three-pointer with nine minutes remaining.

Widener did not fall behind until, with four minutes left, Joe Schwalm made a basket to give Elizabethtown (7-15, 4-11) the lead. Brown kept the Pride in the game by sinking two free throws to give Widener another lead. Radomicki made a layup with one minute remaining in regulation and Brown made two more free throws, but a two-point jump shot from Blue Jay Will Schlosser with one second left was enough to send the game into overtime, tied at 70-70.

In overtime, Widener eventually got the edge by scoring 11 points to Elizabethtown's seven. The first minute and a half was scoreless, until Lawson hit two free throws. Elizabethtown did not score until 2:45 was left when Ben Cable made both of his own free throws. Ten seconds later, Lawson sank two more free throws, canceled out by a layup from Mantz.  With just less than two minutes remaining, Radomicki hit a 3-pointer. In the final 30 seconds, Lawson made two more free throws and Makor sank two of his own to lift the Pride to 81 points. Schwalm hit a 3-pointer with three seconds left, but it was not enough.

Lawson shot 10-for-14 from the line to go with 16 defensive rebounds.  His previous career bests were 15 points against Richard Stockton on December 15 and 14 rebounds at Arcadia on December 12.

Radomicki totaled 14 points, stemming from shooting 5-of-8 in field goals, 3-of-3 in 3-pointers and 1-for-2 from the line. Fields shot 5-of-18 in field goal attempts and served up three assists. Brown went 6-for-7 from the line and Makor shot 100 percent from the stripe. As a team, Widener shot 37 percent in field goals, 47 percent in 3-pointers and 74 percent from the line.

Widener travels to Reading, PA to play in its final away game of the season on Saturday against Alvernia at approximately 3:00 pm, after the women's game.
