Men's Basketball Cruises Past Del Val, 93-86, to Win Tip-Off Tournament

Widener defeated Delaware Valley, 93-86, to claim the top prize at the Widener Tip-Off Tournament for Autism Awareness at Schwartz Center.

The Pride (2-0) trailed by 13 early in the game, but fought back to take the lead at halftime 38-35. In the second half, Widener dominated possession and held a double-digit lead in the last two minutes of play.

As a team, Widener held the advantage in rebounds 38-29, and shot 55 percent from the field compared to Del Val's 42 percent.

Senior captain Andrew Radomicki (Media, PA) took home tournament MVP honors by scoring a team-high 20 points and shooting 7-of-10 from the field. The Pride point guard also brought down five rebounds, dished out five assists and added two steals.

Forwards, senior Rob McPherson (Bowie, MD) and junior Greg Lawson (Mount Holly, NJ) each landed a space on the all-tournament team as well. McPherson Scored 19 points against Del-Val and added three rebounds. Lawson had a combined 22 points and 24 rebounds in the weekend against Del Val and Berkeley.

Sophomore guard Laron Byrd (Philadelphia, PA) continued on his momentum from Friday night's game to score 12 points and shoot 58 percent from the field. Byrd, a transfer from California University (PA), defensively brought down four rebounds and led the Pride with two blocks.

Adding eight points to the Widener total, junior Dillon Fields (Medford, NJ) recorded four rebounds and three assists.

Entering off the bench to fuel the Pride were junior Mark Pryzbylkowski (New Egypt, NJ) and freshman Sardayah Sambo (Middletown, DE). Pryzbylkowski netted eight points, went 2-of-4 from beyond the arc and dished two assists. Sambo scored eight points and managed two steals. Widener scored 30 points from off the bench compared to its opponent's 27.

"It was good to get a win this early in the season versus a very talented and well coached team," Widener coach Chris Carideo said. "Our seniors really stepped up to the challenge playing against a team that made the NCAA Tournament last year and won the Freedom Conference championship. I'm excited at the 2-0 start, but we realize it's a long season and we want to focus on getting better every day, therefore, our next task is to prepare and improve for Tuesday's game."

Widener returns to action at the Schwartz Center on Tuesday to face Cairn at 7:00 pm.
