Men's Basketball Battles Hard In 71-67 Loss to Albright

(box score)

Widener led second-place Albright for most of the second half, but eventually was dealt a tough 71-67 Commonwealth Conference loss at Schwartz Center.

Junior Andrew Radomicki (Media, PA) gave Widener, which led by as many as six in the second half, some momentum with 2:27 left when he hit a driving layup for a 66-65 lead.  After Andre Marshall missed a 3-pointer for Albright, sophomore Greg Lawson (Mount Holly, NJ) made 1-of-2 free throws to give the Pride a two-point cushion.

Marshall wasted little time as he drove to the goal and made a layup with 1:34 to play for a 67-67 tie.  Sophomore Dillon Fields (Medford, NJ) had been hot most of the contest and was asked to give Widener the lead, but his jumper bounced off the rim.

The Lions (14-3, 7-3 CC) now had their chance for the lead and cleared out for Singleton.  He dribbled the ball at the top of the key and with the shot clock running down, drilled a jumper with 46 seconds left for a 69-67 cushion and the fifth lead change in the last five minutes.

Widener (4-13, 3-7) now was looking for the tie and turned to junior Rodney Brown (Lake Valley, NJ), but his shot from 15 feet was partially blocked by Kyle Jordan and rebounded by Marshall.  Jordan then made two free throws with 22 seconds remaining for the final.

Fields ended with 20 points, including 18 in the first half, to mark the fourth time this season he has hit that number.  Radomicki added 19 for the Pride, who shot 46 percent (27-of-59) from the floor and nailed seven 3-pointers.

Singleton poured in 24 points on 11-of-17 shooting to go with seven rebounds for the Lions, who shot 50 percent (14-of-28) in the second half.  Jordan scored 14 points and Zach Benjamin added 11.

Widener is home Saturday against Lebanon Valley, starting at 8:00 pm.
