Women's Basketball Dealt 67-58 Setback at No. 5 Messiah

Widener faced a tough challenge in fifth-ranked Messiah and was handed a 67-58 Commonwealth Conference loss in Grantham, PA.
 
Messiah scored 13 straight points in just over three minutes to turn a 12-11 deficit into a 24-12 lead with 8:36 left in the first half.  Nicky Hess scored five points in that burst and ended it on a layup.
 
Widener closed to 46-43 with 11:16 remaining when junior Jennifer Egee (Ridley Park, PA) canned a 3-pointer.  But Dori Gyori converted a three-point play on Messiah's next possession for a six-point game and Sienna Wisse hit a jumper with 10:11 to go for a 51-43 margin.
 
The Pride (12-4, 7-2 CC) could get no closer than six points the rest of the way in a contest they shot 33 percent (20-of-60) from the floor.
 
Egee again played great with 18 points, three 3-pointers and five rebounds.  Kate Dellinger (Wrightsville, PA) had 15 points and seven rebounds with fellow senior Lil Carney (Narberth, PA) adding 10 points and six assists for the Pride.
 
Gyori dominated with 20 points on 8-of-15 shooting, Hess scored 16 points on 6-of-7 shooting with four 3-pointers and Miller netted 16 points with five 3-pointers for Messiah (15-1, 9-0), which shot 10-of-17 from the beyond the arc and 54 percent (23-of-43) overall.
 
Widener is home Saturday against Albright, starting at 1:00 pm.
