Softball Drops Final Games To Alvernia

(Game 1) / (Game 2)
Widener faced Alvernia for a Commonwealth Conference doubleheader on its final game day of the 2012 season and lost both, 8-1 and 11-2.

Alvernia (30-8, 10-4 CC) scored three runs off of six hits and two errors in the first inning of game one, which turned out would have been enough to take the win. The Crusaders scored four more runs by the fourth inning, when Widener scored its first.

With two outs in the bottom of the fourth inning, junior Jess Way (Marlton, NJ) hit a single to left-center and moved to second when Valarie Perretti (Clayton, NJ) drew a base-on-balls. Freshman designated player Taylor Shultz (Parker Ford, PA) hit a groundball single up the middle to score Way. Jackie Korang (Delran, NJ) hit a ball through the left side of the infield, but Perretti was given the red light and stopped at third base, leaving the bases loaded. The inning ended with an infield pop-up, stranding three runners on the bags.

In game one, Korang (12-8) went 3-for-3 at the plate. Way hit 1-for-3 and scored once with Shultz, who also went 1-for-3, responsible for her run.

Brittanie Wolfe (17-4) received the win for the Crusaders, giving up just one earned run over seven complete innings.

Game two held more hope for the Pride (22-18, 5-9) as the end of the first inning saw them down by just one run.

Alvernia scored three runs in the first inning on three hits and two errors. Danielle Lightner, catcher for the Crusaders, hit a two out, three run homerun to left-center—all three runs were unearned.

On the flip-side of the inning, freshman Carissa Harris (Douglassville, PA) led Widener off with a single to centerfield. With two outs down and Harris still standing on first, catcher Shelby Mackintosh (Lumberton, NJ) hit a left field single and was followed by a single through the left side of the infield by Way that scored Harris. Shultz then picked up another RBI on the day with an infield single to the shortstop, scoring Mackintosh from third before the inning came to an end.

Alvernia had two more scoring innings, six runs in the third and two in the fifth, which gave them an 11-2 boost. Only two of the 11 runs were earned, both charged to relief pitcher Harris.

Mackintosh went 2-for-3 at the plate in game two and crossed home plate once. Way went 1-for-3 and Shultz hit 1-for-2, each picking up an RBI.

The win for game two went to relief pitcher Deanna Dungee (10-3), who over four innings gave up just three hits, struck out three and did not allow any runs to score. Christine Mattis (Drexel Hill, PA) got the start and the loss, giving her a 9-8 record.

Before and after the games Widener celebrated its lone graduating senior, Sarah Hart (Berlin, NJ), who upon graduation will travel to Rhode Island to become a naval nurse in the United States Navy. In the 2013 season, the Pride returns 14 players to the field.
