Softball Gains Split Against Neumann

(Game 1) / (Game 2)

Casey Hargadon (Wallingford, PA) and fellow junior Shelby Mackintosh (Lumberton, NJ) homered on consecutive pitches in the first inning of game one for Widener, which notched an 8-4 win over Neumann followed by a 4-2 loss.

Hargadon cracked a two-run homer for her fourth long ball of the year and Mackintosh followed with her fifth of the season for a 3-0 margin.  The Pride (22-16) added five more runs in the third for an 8-0 lead thanks to sophomore Valarie Perretti (Clayton, NJ) smacking a long two-run homer and junior Jody Salvatore (Williamstown, NJ) lining a two-run single.

Neumann (20-14) got three runs in the top of the fourth for an 8-3 contest, aided by Becca Reinhart ripping a two-run double.

Delran, NJ sophomore Jackie Korang (12-7) recorded her fourth straight win, yielding just three runs – two earned – and eight hits over 3 1/3 innings.  Freshmen Carissa Harris (Douglassville, PA) and Taylor Shultz (Parker Ford, PA) combined to permit just an unearned run over 3 2/3 relief frames.

It was win number 499 for Fred Dohrmann, who is in his 32nd season as Widener's softball coach.

Sarah McGann (4-4) was charged with eight runs – five earned – and six hits over three innings for the Knights.

Neumann in the second game needed just one hit and three Widener errors to plate two runs and open a 4-2 lead.  The Knights had runners on second and third with none out and looked like they would come up empty after Megan Williams and Allie White each grounded out.  But Reinhart hit a liner off junior pitcher Christine Mattis (Drexel Hill, PA) that scored Alyssa Falsetti and an error on the play allowed Mariah Ripken to cross home.

Mattis (9-7) permitted four runs – one earned – and four hits over 6 2/3 innings.  Hargadon and Mackintosh had two hits apiece.

Kirstin Beaty (2-3) tossed two scoreless innings of relief for the Knights, who managed only four hits.

Widener on Saturday battles Alvernia in a doubleheader at home to close the season, starting at 1:00 pm.
