Softball Splits With Haverford

(Game 1) / (Game 2)

Widener rallied in the bottom of the seventh in game one, but could not come out on top of a 12-8 deficit, followed by a 5-0 shutout thrown by junior Christine Mattis (Drexel Hill, PA) tonight against Haverford.

Haverford (12-11-1) in game one put a run across in the first inning when Elizabeth Newman singled through the left side of the infield, reached second on a failed pick-off attempt and reached home on a base-hit through the right-side of the infield.

Widener took the lead for the only time in game one in the third inning. Shortstop Casey Hargadon (Wallingford, PA) was put on first after being hit by a pitch and advanced to third when catcher Shelby Mackintosh (Lumberton, NJ) doubled to right-center. A suicide-squeeze attempt by Jess Way (Marlton, NJ) brought Hargadon in for the Pride's first run. Mackintosh then scored on a ground-out.

Widener's bats fell silent until the bottom of the seventh inning, but it was too late as the Fords were able to put 11 more runs on the board in three separate innings. On three hits and two errors, the Pride (16-12) gave themselves a chance by putting six runs on the board. Jody Salvatore (Williamstown, NJ) was the first base runner in the inning and reached on a walk, followed by two back-to-back fielding errors committed by the Fords' shortstop. Freshman Carissa Harris (Douglassville, PA) hit a single to the shortstop to score Salvatore easily. Hargadon gave Widener hope with a grand slam to left-center field, her second of the season, to close the scoring.

In game two, Widener scored all of its runs in the fourth and fifth innings. Second baseman Colleen Orsborn (Drexel Hill, PA) led off the fourth inning with a bunt for a base-hit and was then bunted over to second by pitcher Mattis.  Center fielder Jen Nance (Lansdowne, PA) had a hit go through the left-side of the infield to easily score Orsborn, giving the Pride its first run.

The next inning, Widener gave Mattis some room to breathe by scoring four more runs.  Salvatore, Hargadon and Mackintosh each singled, in order, to load the bases for Way who hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield to score Salvatore.  In another successful squeeze attempt, Orsborn executed a perfect bunt to score Hargadon from third.  After Orsborn stole second, Nance singled again—this time through the right-side—to score both her and Mackintosh.

Mattis (7-4), throughout seven complete innings, did not allow any runs, gave up just five hits, struck out three and walked two.

Widener on Saturday hosts Messiah in a Commonwealth Conference doubleheader, with game one beginning at 1:00 pm.
