Softball Drops Two To Elizabethtown

(Game 1) / (Game 2)
Elizabethtown's heavy bats mixed with six Widener errors between the two games resulted in two losses, 11-3 and 10-6, in today's Commonwealth Conference doubleheader.

Elizabethtown (16-8, 4-0 CC) scored four runs right away in the first inning, two of which came from a home run hit by Jessica White, and followed with three more runs on four hits in the second inning.

The score sitting 7-0 for the Pride's second at bat, junior Shelby Mackintosh (Lumberton, NJ) hit a lead-off right-center double. The Blue Jays were able to get two outs to keep her from scoring, but an error committed by shortstop Lindsey Cooper allowed Mackintosh to score and gave Widener (12-8, 2-4) its first run.

Starting pitching Jackie Korang (Delran, NJ) saw four batters in the third inning and did not allow any hits or runs. Coming into the bottom of the third, Widener was able to gain back two more runs. Freshman Carissa Harris (Douglassville, PA) singled to right-center and advanced to second due to the hesitation of the fielders. Jody Salvatore (Williamstown, NJ) then single to left-center, moving Harris to third. Right fielder Jess Way (Marlton, NJ) flew out to left field, but gained an RBI when she scored Harris. Casey Hargadon (Wallingford, PA) hit a single to left field, scoring Salvatore easily and giving the Pride its third (and last) run of the game.

Harris finished 1-for-3 at the plate with one run. Hargadon was also 1-for-3 and picked up an RBI. Third baseman Kristina Kenney (Philadelphia, PA) batted 2-for-3 and also picked up an RBI. Korang took her third loss, with Julie Sebastian taking the win for Elizabethtown.

Game two held more hope for the Pride, but they could not take the lead. By the third inning's midway point, the Blue Jays held three runs, but Widener was able to put two runs of its own on the board. With two outs down, centerfielder Valarie Perretti (Clayton, NJ) singled through the left-side. Harris then stepped up to the plate and blasted her first career homerun over the left field fence.

Widener took the lead in the bottom of the fifth with four runs on five hits. Korang started things off with a double to centerfield. Perretti then dropped a left-handed bunt and sped down the line to be in for a single, moving Korang to third. Harris picked up an RBI with a double down the left field line that hit off of third base.

With one out down, Way singled to left field, scoring Perretti and moving Harris to third. Hargadon ripped a double to left-center and scored both Harris and Way before the end of the inning.

Widener held a 6-4 lead, but the Blue Jays, with the help of one of six Pride errors in the two games, gained three runs on two hits. Shortstop Cooper hit a home run to straight away center to lead off the top of the sixth. Third baseman Elly McCarthy was hit by a pitch, stole second, and advanced to third on a wild pitch. On the day, McCarthy ended 5-for-6 with three doubles and a homerun in game one and a homerun in game two. Jessica White was walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Julie Sebastian hit a sacrifice fly to center to score McCarthy. White scored on a fielding error, giving Elizabethtown the lead, 7-6.

Sebastian, who moved from designated player to pitcher with one out remaining in the fifth inning, retired Pride hitters in order. The Blue Jays were able to pick up three insurance runs in the top of the seventh inning from four hits and one error. With the Pride's last chance to win the game, Sebastian got three outs on four batters—Way singled through the right-side with two outs.

In game two, Harris hit 2-for-4 with two runs and three RBI. Way also hit 2-for-4, scored once and had one RBI. Hargadon and Perretti each hit 2-for-3, with Hargadon picking up two RBI and Perretti scoring twice.

Widener on Monday travels to Immaculata for a doubleheader, beginning at 3:00 pm.
