Hargadon’s Grand Slam Helps Softball Sweep Swarthmore

(Game 1) / (Game 2)
Junior Casey Hargadon (Wallingford, PA) had a hot bat in game two of today's doubleheader to help Widener gain a sweep over Swarthmore, winning 3-0 in game one and 9-8 in the night cap.

Widener (10-4) saw itself down by four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning of game two. Freshman Carissa Harris (Douglassville, PA) reached first by bringing the count to a full boat and drawing a walk. Jess Way (Marlton, NJ) hit a swinging bunt and was safe at first, moving Harris over to second. Catcher Shelby Mackintosh (Lumberton, NJ) then hit a hard ground ball to the third baseman, Rose Pitkin, who could not come up with it, making the bases loaded. Hargadon stepped up to the plate, with a double and a triple already under her belt from her second and third at-bats, and blasted a grand slam over the center-field fence to tie the game, 8-8.

Harris, who was brought in to pitch in the fourth inning, was able to get out of the seventh and eighth innings unharmed. Jackie Korang (Delran, NJ) was placed as a runner on second base per international tie-breaker rules. Harris, who hit 3-for-4 in game two, dropped a double down the left field line and Korang scored standing up to secure the sweep.

Harris (1-0) notched her first win. Jody Salvatore (Williamstown, NJ) and Mackintosh each went 2-for-4. Hargadon ended hitting 3-for-4, just a single away from the cycle, with seven RBI.

Widener, in game one, scored all of its runs in the third inning. Harris reached first on a walk and advanced to second due to an illegal pitch. Way, 1-for-3 with an RBI, hit a double to left field to score Harris. Mackintosh, with an 0-2 count, lined her second home run of the season over the left-center fence to give the Pride a 3-0 lead.

Korang was solid in pitching in the first game. Facing 25 batters over seven innings, she did not give up any runs, allowed just five hits and stranded four runners on base.

Widener travels to Annville, PA to take on Lebanon Valley on Saturday for a Commonwealth Conference doubleheader, beginning at 1:00 pm.
